Flicker sera la future adaptation cinématographique du roman La Conspiration des ténèbres écrit par Theodore Roszak, écrivain connu des amateurs de science-fiction (notamment pour son roman Puces) comme des férus de sociologie underground (son essai Vers une contre-culture fit sensation en 1970). Le film est prévu pour 2011.
Le pavé de plus de sept cents pages narre la fascination d'un jeune homme pour le septième art. Passant son temps dans les salles obscures plus ou moins recommandables de Los Angeles, Jonathan Gates va particulièrement s'intéresser au cas d'un metteur en scène maudit, un certain Max Castle. On dit à son sujet qu'il serait l'auteur d'une adaptation perdue du chef-d'œuvre de Conrad Au cœur des ténèbres (qui inspira à Francis Ford Coppola son Apocalypse Now). Une longue et effrayante investigation commence donc pour le novice Jonathan, le menant dans le milieu de la production cinématographique. Mais pas seulement. Au fait, qui était donc Max Castle ? La réponse n'est évidemment pas le seul intérêt de ce roman formidablement construit, dont l'érudition n'est pas qu'un cache-misère. Au-delà de l'intrigue machiavélique, cette Conspiration des ténèbres nous interroge sur le pouvoir et le sens de l'image.
