Les Event-Related Potential ou ERP sont des signaux recherchés à travers une situation expérimentale qui étudie une fonction cognitive. On enregistre l'activité électrique des neurones grace à l'EEG, et des électrodes. À cela s'ajoute un certain nombre d'autres appareils d'enregistrements, comme les ordinateurs, qui permettent d'amplifier et retirer les bruits de fond du cerveau. Ainsi, on obtient un EEG, c'est à dire le signal pertinent qui va vraiment être la réponse due à la situation expérimentale étudiée.
