Erle Stanley Gardner en 1966
Erle Stanley Gardner (né le 17 juillet 1889 à Malden, Massachusetts, mort le 11 mars 1970 à Temecula, Californie), est un écrivain américain, auteur de romans policiers. Lui-même ancien avocat, il a notamment créé le personnage de Perry Mason, l'avocat détective interprété à la télévision par Raymond Burr. La série des Perry Mason s'amorce en 1933 par la publication de Sur la corde raide (titre original: The Case of the Velvet Claws) et compte pas moins de 82 romans et 3 recueils de nouvelles[1].
Erle Stanley Gardner a publié de nombreux romans sous de multiples pseudonymes : A.A. Fair, Kyle Corning, Charles M. Green, Carleton Kendrake, Charles J. Kenny, Les Tillray, Robert Parr… Le pseudonyme A.A. Fair permet à Gardner d'inventer l'héroïne récurrente Bertha Cool, grosse dame fort laide, mais supérieurement intelligente, qui possède sa propre agence de détective privé avec son acolyte Donald Lam[2]. Cette série se veut la concurrente de celle du détective Nero Wolfe, inventé par Rex Stout.
En 1962, l'ensemble de son œuvre fut couronnée par le Grand Master Award du prix Edgar Allan Poe. Il succédait ainsi à Ellery Queen.
