Edward Lloyd (mort en 1713) est un Gallois qui à la fin du XVIIe siècle tenait une taverne dans Lombard Street[1].

Dans cette taverne se réunissaient les marchands de Londres concernés par les assurances maritimes. Il a donné son nom à la taverne Lloyd's Coffee House, qui elle-même a donné son nom à la célèbre compagnie Lloyd's of London et à la compagnie maritime Norddeutscher Lloyd, fondée à Brême en 1857 par Hermann Henrich Meier[2], devenue Hapag-Lloyd en 1970[3].

Edward Lloyd est le premier à avoir eu l'idée d'assurer le commerce maritime britannique par la constitution de contrats d'assurance des navires et de leurs cargaisons. Tous les équipages payaient une assurance (mutualisation des risques de naufrage) qui servait à indemniser ceux qui avaient rencontré des difficultés et avaient perdu la totalité ou une partie de leur cargaison. En cas de surplus, Lloyd empochait cet excédent et c'est comme cela qu'il fit fortune et fonda la première compagnie d'assurance du commerce maritime britannique. Donc, le développement du commerce maritime entraînait le secteur des assurances et des banques, ces dernières étant impliquées dans le financement de la construction des bateaux ou de l'achat des cargaisons pour le compte des capitaines de vaisseaux.
