E.B. Farnum

Ethan Bennett Farnum (né le 10 novembre 1826, à Cheshire (Massachusetts), Comté de Berkshire – décédé vers 1878) fut l'un des tout premiers habitants de Deadwood à n'être ni un mineur ni un prospecteur. Il y ouvre un petit magasin en 1876. Farnum était l'époux de Mary Farnum avec qui il avait trois enfants, Sylvia, 16 ans, Edward, 12 ans, et Lyde, 2 ans lors de leur arrivée à Deadwood. Il a été le premier maire de Deadwood.

Avant son arrivée à Deadwood, E.B. Farnum et sa famille habitaient dans le Wisconsin.

Voyant tout le potentiel du camp, il se porte acquéreur de plusieurs lots le long de la rue principale. Avec d'autres hommes d'affaires, il contribue à la création d'une route joignant Deadwood à Centennial afin d'assurer l'approvisionnement du camp. Il investit également dans des entreprises minières.

En 1876, il est élu maire et obtient une reconnaissance officielle du camp par le gouvernement du territoire. Il tient également la fonction de juge.

Il quittera finalement Deadwood pour Chicago (Illinois).
