Down on the Upside est le cinquième et dernier album studio du groupe de grunge Soundgarden. Il sortit le 21 mai 1996 chez A&M Records. Bien que cet album reçu une forte reconnaissance (deux singles furent présent dans le Mainstream Rock charts), les ventes se sont rapidement affaiblies et il ne connu pas la même popularité que son prédécésseur Superunknown. Egalement en 1996, Alice in Chains (autre groupe de Seattle) venait de sortir son dernier album studio sans tournée majeur. Kurt Cobain s'était suicidé 2 ans auparavant (marquant la fin de Nirvana), et la popularité de Pearl Jam baissa après la sortie non promu de No Code. Tous des évenements qui marquèrent ce que beaucoup appellent "the end of grunge".
