Ananta

Ananta est un serpent (nâga) de la mythologie indienne. Son nom en sanskrit signifie sans fin ou sans limite, éternel ou infini.
Reposant sur les eaux primordiales, Ananta, le serpent cosmique, sert de couche à Vishnu lorsque celui-ci se repose après la dissolution (pralaya) d'un univers ancien, en attendant que Brahmâ renaisse de son nombril et crée un univers nouveau.
Ananta est représenté lové sur lui-même, le capuchon déployé en halo autour de la tête de Vishnu. Ses têtes sont multiples, au nombre de sept ou de mille.
D'autres légendes sont associées à Ananta sous le nom de Shesha ou Vâsuki.
Il a donné son nom à la ville de Thiruvananthapuram (« cité du seigneur Ananta » en sanskrit).
