Le dinghy, d'origine indienne, servait à désigner une petite embarcation ouverte (non pontée). Les Anglais, en l'adoptant, n'ont pas défiguré l'acception première. Ils l'ont utilisée pour définir les petits dériveurs (à voile), puis les coques motorisées, toujours sans pontage. Actuellement, « dinghy » est parfois employé en français pour désigner de petits hors-bords dont le petit pontage à l'avant ne sert qu'à la protection d'un vaste cockpit.
