Marcus MillerDavid Sanborn (né le 30 juillet 1945) est un saxophoniste américain, associé au smooth jazz, mais dont le jeu s'étend néanmoins à des styles comme le jazz, le blues, le rhythm'n'blues, et plus généralement le jazz fusion.
Participant à un nombre important d'enregistrements studios depuis les années 1970, il s'est également fait connaître par ses diverses présences scéniques dans le monde entier.

Biographie
David Sanborn est né le 30 juillet 1945 à Tampa, en Floride et a grandi à Kirkwood, dans le Missouri.
Atteint de poliomyélite encore enfant, son père décida de lui offrir un saxophone pour lui renforcer la cage thoracique.
Il débuta dans l'orchestre de Paul Butterfield, avec lequel il développe le son qui le rendra célèbre: un son riche, ample, qui le fait parfois comparer à celui d'un saxophone ténor. Après 4 années dans le groupe[1], il entame une carrière prolifique de session man. On le verra notamment avec des artistes aussi reconnus que Gil Evans, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie sur l'album "Young Americans" ou Sting sur le titre "It's probably me" tiré de la BO de l'Arme Fatale 3..
Envol
En 1975, l'album Taking Off ouvre la voie à une nouvelle carrière d'enregistrements studio sous son nom. L'œuvre, ainsi que les 3 suivantes, permettent à David Sanborn de confirmer son aisance et son style sur des compositions latines, funky ou intimistes au côté de Don Grolnick, Hiram Bullock ou Buzzy Feiten.
Maturité
C'est véritablement avec l'album Hideaway que David Sanborn affirme son talent, tant stylistique (Hideaway) que créatif (Lisa, qui sera repris tout au long de sa carrière).
Style
Si le son de David Sanborn s'est révélé rapidement (depuis le Butterfield Blues Band), son jeu et ses techniques d'improvisation ont évolué tout au long de sa carrière. Une approche directe et globale peut être de mesurer ce jeu selon les diverses époques que le saxophoniste a traversé: west coast, latin jazz, disco funk, fusion, pop rock, acid jazz, rhythm'n'blues, blues.
