Le Championnat de Nouvelle-Zélande de football a été créé en 1970. Depuis 2004 un nouveau championnat basé sur un système de franchise a été créé.

Il est à noter que depuis sa création en 2005, la A-League, le championnat professionnel australien compte parmi ces rangs au moins un club néo-zélandais.
