Créée le 1er janvier 2007, elle regroupe les anciens amter de Ringkjøbing et de Aarhus ainsi qu'une partie des amter de Viborg et de Vejle.
La région d'une superficie de 13 142 km², est administrée depuis Viborg. Population 1er janvier 2007 était de 1 227 428 habitants.
