Le Center for World Indigenous Studies (CWIS) a été fondé en 1984 par le Dr Rudolph C. Ryser, Ph.D. (la tribu indienne Cowlitz) et le chef George Manuel (1929-1989) (la Nation Shuswap) comme une organisation éducative et de recherche indépendante. Il a fait suite à une chambre de compensation de recherche et de documentation créé en 1979 en réponse aux appels de la Conférence des Gouvernements Tribaux aux États-Unis et le Conseil mondial des peuples indigènes.
George Manuel, l'ancien chef de la Fraternité indienne Nationale/Assemblée des premières nations au Canada, fut le premier à proposer aux peuples indigènes, la communication et la coordination globale naissantes du colonialisme. Par leur formation du Conseil mondial des peuples indigènes, lui et le Dr Ryser [1] ont posé les bases pour un forum indigène et les groupes de travail à l'ONU [2].
Joe DelaCruz (1937-2000) [3], dirigeant la politique publique du CWIS et ancien président du National Congress of American Indians, a été appelé une fois le plus grand dirigeant indien d'Amérique du XXe siècle.
Le CWIS est aujourd'hui considéré comme le premier « think tank » indigène et dépositaire d'archives utiles au Quart-monde.
