Le navire capital, traduction du terme anglais capital ship largement employé en français , désigne le type de navire qui constitue le navire principal d'une marine militaire.

Terme militaire anglo-saxon, il est passé dans le langage courant depuis le traité de Washington de 1922. Au départ, ce terme désignait tout navire de guerre, à l'exclusion des porte-avions et des sous-marins, d'un tonnage supérieur à 10 000 tonnes et dont l'artillerie possédait des calibres supérieurs à 203 mm. Le cuirassé était alors souvent le capital ship des grandes marines nationales. Mais depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale et les campagnes du Pacifique (1942-1945), il a été remplacé par le porte-avions lourd. Depuis les années 1960, certains stratèges considèrent que c'est le sous-marin à propulsion et armes nucléaires qui a ce titre.
