Cædmon
Cædmon, Cædmon de Whitby, ou encore Cedmon, né dans la Northumbrie, mort en 680, est un poète du VIIe siècle considéré comme le plus ancien poète chrétien anglo-saxon. Il était moine au monastère double de Whitby.
Il est considéré comme saint et fêté le 11 février.
Œuvre
Il a mis en vers anglo-saxons la Genèse et les plus beaux passages de la Bible.
Ce qui reste de ses poésies, monument précieux de la langue saxonne, a été publié par François Du Jon à Amsterdam en 1655, et à Londres par Benjamin Thorpe avec commentaires en1832.
