Un Building Block est un module applicatif intégré à la plateforme pédagogique Blackboard afin d'étendre ses fonctionnalités.
Définition étendue
Un Building Block est un simple ensemble de fichiers installé sur le serveur d’application Blackboard. Cet ensemble de fichiers est en fait une application web structurée de telle sorte que le serveur puisse prédéfinir des points d’entrée afin de localiser les ressources pour ensuite appeler les fonctionnalités du dit Building Block. Les points d’entrée sont des Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) qui sont inscrits dans la base de données du Blackboard Learning System.
Fonctions
En résumé, un Building Block est un module intégré au logiciel pédagogique Blackboard, et peut :
- Étendre la Blackboard Academic Suite avec de nouvelles fonctionnalités ;
- Permettre de personnaliser la plateforme pour des besoins pédagogiques ;
- Aider à l’administration du système ;
- Automatiser certaines procédures et tâches répétitives ;
- Jouer le rôle d’un pont entre la Blackboard Academic Suite et un système ou une application externe.

Voici l’arborescence type d’un building block. Effectivement, cela ressemble beaucoup à une arborescence de projet web Java. Effectivement, Blackboard intègre, entre autres, une API Java permettant de construire les buildings blocks.
