William Cathcart

William Cathcart

William Cathcart (né le 17 septembre 1755 à Londres et décédé le 16 juin 1843 à Glasgow) était un militaire et diplomate britannique. Général de l'armée britannique, il fut fait comte de Cathcart et décoré de l'Ordre du Chardon et nommé membre du Conseil privé (Royaume-Uni) et du Conseil privé d'Irlande.

Il fit ses études au Eton College puis accompagna son père Charles Cathcart, 9e Lord Cathcart dès 1771 à Saint-Pétersbourg où il était ambassadeur. Il fit des études de droit avant de succéder à son père à la Chambre des Lords en 1776.

Il combattit durant la Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis (du côté britannique). Il se distingua à la Bataille de Monmouth.

Il participa ensuite aux guerres de la révolution et de l'Empire. Il se distingua à la bataille de Copenhague (1807).

A partir de 1812, il fut ambassadeur en Russie et au quartier-général de la Sixième Coalition. Il resta en poste en Russie jusqu'en 1820 avant de prendre sa retraite.
