Bio-hacker
Le mot bio-hacker est un néologisme construit à partir des mots biologie et hacker.
Un bio-hacker est un terme qui décrit un individu expérimentant les propriétés de l'ADN et des autres aspects de la génétique, dans le cadre ou en-dehors du cadre académique, gouvernementaux ou des laboratoires. Les bio-hackers sont comparables aux hackers informatiques dans leur approche ouverte de leur champ d'étude.
Le développement exponentiel du décryptage de génomes vivants, sans hausse des coûts d'infrastructures techniques (comparable à la loi de Moore concernant les systèmes informatiques) est propice à l'apparition d'une sous-culture de bio-hackers désireux d'exploiter toutes les potentialités liées à la science génétique.
On doit toutefois différencier les bio-hackers étant donné la matière qu'ils exploitent, liée de très près à des préoccupations d'ordre éthique, voire militaire dans certains cas (voir virologie).
Certains bio-artistes connus, comme Eduardo Kac ou le laboratoire Symbiotica, peuvent être directement assimilés aux méthodes de travail des bio-hackers.
