Thomas Adams (1818–1905), était un scientifique et inventeur américain du XIXe siècle. Il est considéré comme le fondateur de l'industrie du chewing-gum. Il s'est allié finalement[Quand ?] avec le célèbre producteur de chewing-gum William Wrigley Junior.
Adams eut l'idée du chewing-gum alors qu'il était secrétaire de l'homme d'état mexicain Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Santa Ana mâchait le chicle, une gomme extraite du sapotillier. Adams essaya d'abord, sans succès, d'en faire une sorte de caoutchouc pour les pneus. Il chercha ensuite d'autres utilisations au chicle : en lui ajoutant du sucre, il créa en 1872 un premier chewing-gum.
