Un bivouac sur ce genre de voie permet de très longues ascensions.
Cette pratique est utilisée dans des terrains d'escalade démesurés.
Le big wall est une activité associée à l'escalade. Elle consiste à gravir des parois souvent très verticales de plus de 600 mètres de haut et pouvant parfois atteindre 1 400 m. Les grimpeurs dorment alors en paroi sur des vires ou dans des tentes (« portalede ») accrochées à la paroi. Ces escalades peuvent durer plusieurs jours voire plusieurs semaines sans toucher le sol. Cette escalade extrême est souvent pratiquée dans les parcs nationaux de Parc national de Yosemite et Zion aux États-Unis, mais aussi au Pakistan (Trango Tower), en terre de Baffin, et surtout en Patagonie. Elle se pratique également souvent en terrain d'aventure (pas de points en place, tout sur friends, coinceurs, pitons, etc.)
