Prithwindra Mukherjee, né en 1936 à Calcutta, est un chercheur bengali établi à Paris depuis 1966. Ethnomusicologue, poète, traducteur, spécialiste de la civilisation et de la philosophie indiennes, il fut membre du Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) entre 1981 et 2003. Il est l'auteur de nombreuses publications dans plusieurs langues (bengali, français, anglais).

En 1986 il soutient sous la présidence d'Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie une thèse de doctorat d'État commencée avec Raymond Aron décédé en 1983.
