Pommy

Le terme pommy, souvent raccourci en pom, est couramment utilisé par les Australiens, Néozélandais et parfois les Sud-Africains pour qualifier les Britanniques. Bien qu'originellement péjoratif, le Australian Advertising Standards Board a statué que ce terme n'était plus offensant. Cette décision est contestée[1].

L'origine du terme n'est pas confirmée. D'après l'Oxford English Dictionary, pom serait une contraction de pomegranate, mot anglais du fruit la grenade[2]. Comme pour le terme « rosbif », c'est l'apparence de certains Anglais après quelques heures au soleil.

Un autre explication, a priori fausse mais largement répandue, POM est l'acronyme de prisoner of (his/her) majesty ou prisoner of mother England.
