Le Packet Data Protocol est l'élément fondamental du transport des informations dans tous les réseaux d'ordinateurs actuels.
Un paquet des données est composé de trois éléments :
- Une tête (header) qui contient les informations nécessaires pour transférer le paquet de l'émetteur au récepteur.
- Zone données (payload) qui contient les données.
- La queue (trailer) qui comprend le code de correction des erreurs.
