Le name dropping est une figure de style qui consiste à citer des noms connus, notamment des noms de personnes, d'institution ou de marques commerciales.
Ce procédé a souvent une connotation péjorative ou sarcastique car il est perçu comme la tentative d'impressionner les interlocuteurs. Utilisé dans un raisonnement logique, le name dropping peut être considéré comme un argument d'autorité.
Le recours à cette figure de style est une tendance à la mode en littérature moderne. Parmi les principaux auteurs pratiquant la citation de personnages réels dans des fictions, on trouve Bret Easton Ellis, Michel Houellebecq, Christine Angot, Guillaume Dustan, etc.
Des artistes comme Alain Souchon et Vincent Delerm utilisent le name dropping dans de nombreuses chansons. Ce qui était également le cas de Serge Gainsbourg, notamment dans la chanson Flash - Forward.
