Psychologue américain, né le 27 décembre 1918 à Hrubieszow (Pologne), décédé le 25 octobre 1988.
Après des études au Brooklyn College et un doctorat (Ph.D) à l'Université de Californie (Berkeley), il fut professeur de psychologie sociale à la Michigan State University puis à la Washington State University, et reçut le Kurt Lewin Memorial Award de l'American Psychological Association en 1984.
Il a étudié les systèmes croyances et d'attitudes. Ses travaux, issus de ceux d'Adorno, l'amèneront à considérer ses dernières en termes de structure et non plus de contenu (cf. son livre The Open and Closed Mind).
