Distribution
Ce genre regroupe deux espèces endémiques du Pérou.
Étymologie
Le nom de ce genre, Melanophryne, composé des termes grec melanos signifiant « noir » et phrynos, « grenouille », a été choisi en référence à la coloration de ces espèces variant du brun foncé au noir.
