Lokottaravāda était une des vingt écoles du bouddhisme ancien, selon des sources compilées du Mahāyāna par Bhavyaviveka, Vinitadeva et d'autres, c'était un sous-groupe qui a apparu dans la secte Mahāsanghika. Le Mahāvastu, la seule survie du texte complet en sanscrit du Mahāsanghika, est attribué aux Lokottaravādins. Les Lokottaravādins ont affirmé qu'il n'y a aucune chose réelle(vraie) dans le monde sauf deux sortes de vide (śūnyatā), c'est-à-dire la śūnyatā de personnes et la śūnyatā de choses. Le Bouddha est transcendant (lokottara), sa vie et sa manifestation physique sont une simple apparition (apparence).
