Le personnage de Joab apparait dans le deuxième livre de Samuel. Joab est le neveu du roi David, fils de sa sœur Tserouya (2Sa 2:18 17:25). Lorsque ce dernier monte sur le trône, il est fait général en chef. Il reste fidèle au roi même quand Absalom fomente une insurrection contre David. À la mort de David, il prend le parti d’Adonias (1Ro 1:7). Il fut tué sur l’ordre de Salomon par Benaya (1Ro 2:28-35).
