Jeffrey Hopkins (né en 1940) est un tibétologue américain de renom[1]. Il est professeur émérite d’études tibétaines et bouddhistes à l'Université de Virginie, où il a enseigné pendant plus de 30 ans depuis 1973[2]. Il est l’auteur de plus de vingt-cinq livres sur le bouddhisme tibétain, dont le très marquant Meditation on Emptiness[3], qui est paru en 1983, donnant une explication novatrice de la pensée Prasangika-Madyamika de la tradition Gelugpa. Entre 1979 et 1989, il fut l'interprète principal en anglais du dalaï-lama[4] et il a joué un rôle significatif dans le développement du mouvement du Tibet libre[5]. En 2006, il a publié sa traduction anglaise d'un travail majeur du lama Jonangpa, Dolpopa, sur la Nature de Bouddha et le Vide appelé Mountain Doctrine[6].
