J.A. Cushing fut le premier maire d'Acton Vale. Il remplit la fonction de maire durant deux mandats 1861-1863 et 1868-1870. Une rue de la ville est nommé en son honneur. J.A. Cushing était fermier de profession.
Il inaugura la gare qui deviendra l'emblème de la ville.
