Hans Mend (1888-1942) est connu pour avoir été une estafette dans le même régiment que Adolf Hitler durant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Il écrivit un livre dans l'entre-deux-guerres (1931) approuvant les faits d'armes de Hitler. Cependant la contexte et le fait que Mend a reçu de l'argent de la part de son ancien collègue fait douter de la sincérité de la démarche.
De plus, Mend fut inquiété peu après par les autorités nazies. Peut-être en savait-il trop sur les véritables agissements de Hitler sur le front ? Il fut ainsi arrêté et emprisonné en 1936, avant d'être relâché en 1938 puis de nouveau emprisonné... Cette dernière mise sous verrou sera la dernière puisqu'il mourut en prison.
