En 1970 avec l'appui d'une compagnie pétrolière, Bernard Consten, président de la Fédération Française du Sport Automobile, lance le Grand National Tour Auto. Empruntant les mêmes itinéraires que le Tour de France automobile, le Grand National est ouvert aux pilotes titulaires d'une licence nationale.
