Glace Bay (2006 pop. 19,968) est une ancienne municipalité de l'est du Cap-Breton, au Canada. Elle fait partie du secteur industriel du Cap-Breton. La ville était autrefois incorporée, de 1901 à 1995. Lors des fusions, le gouvernement municipal de Glace Bay fut dissous et fusionné à la municipalité régionale, incluant les agglomérations de Reserve Mines, Dominion et Tower Road.
Histoire
Dès 1720, l'endroit fut peuplé d'habitants venus de France. Le village fournissait le charbon nécessaire pour la Forteresse de Louisbourg[1]. Ils nommèrent cet endroit baie de Glace, parce qu'il y avait beaucoup de glace qui remplissait la baie durant l'hiver. Après la formation de la compagnie Dominion Coal en 1893, un certain nombre de mines fut ouvertes et la localité s'appela Glace Bay. D'autres petites communautés grandirent autour des mines et, en 1901, formèrent la ville de Glace Bay. À l'époque, la population était de 6 945[2]. En 1940, il y avait plus de 28 000 habitants[2]. La population a par la suite dégringolée à 16 984 en 2001[3]
