Histoire

Le groupe se rencontre et se forme à Greenville, NC alors que ses membres étudient l'art à l'East Carolina University. Le groupe s'appelle au début Art Lord & the Self-Portraits, et comprend J. Gerrit Welmers, Samuel T. Herring, William Cashion, Adam Beeby, et Kymia Nawabi; il dure de Février 2003 jusqu'à l'automne 2005. En 2006, Cashion, Herring, et Welmers forment Future Islands avec Erick Murillo, qui joue sur une batterie électronique.
