L'Embolotherium aurait vécu au cours de l'Éocène et fait partie de la famille des brontotheriidae. C'était un mammifère végétarien, d'une grande taille, en moyenne 2,5 m de haut, et pouvant peser 5 tonnes. Il ressemblait aux rhinocéros actuel mais l'excroissance sur son museau n'était pas une corne car il s'agit d'une structure osseuse recouvert par de la peau et donc plus fragile qu'une corne de rhinocéros.
