Edward Lee Spence (né en 1947 en Allemagne) est un pionnier américain de l'archéologie sous-marine[1] et un expert sur les épaves et les trésors engloutis[2]. Il est également un éditeur et auteur de livres de référence et d'articles de magazines[3]. Spence découvre sa première épave en plongé libre en bord de mer à l'âge de douze ans alors qu'il vit en France[4],[5],[6].

La découverte la plus remarquable de Spence est l'épave du sous-marin Hunley. Il a également découvert de nombreux autres navires naufragés à la porté historique, y compris le Georgiana'[7]' [8] (qui aurait été le croiseur le plus puissant construit par les armées des États confédérés d'Amérique)[9]'[10].

Une loi en Caroline du Sud, protégeant à la fois l'État et les intérêts des découvreurs des épaves, a été adoptée suite à la découverte par Spence et son entreprise Shipwrecks Inc du Georgiana. Il lui a été accordée en Caroline du Sud une licence d'État n ° 1[11].
