Causa sui (latin : cause de soi-même) dénote quelque chose qui est généré à partir de lui-même. Ce concept fut central dans les travaux[Lesquels ?] de Spinoza, Freud et Ernest Becker, où il se réfère à l'idée que des objets peuvent se désigner[Comment ?] eux-mêmes. Dans le cas de Freud et de Becker, le concept fut souvent utilisé en tant qu'immorale construction[Quoi ?], où quelque chose peut créer du sens ou continuer à créer du sens au-delà de sa propre vie[Comment ?].
Dans la Phénoménologie de la perception, Maurice Merleau-Ponty critiqua Descartes et le cogito en disant qu'il[Quoi ?] s'agissait d'une causa sui. Ainsi, pour être soi-même conscient, il faut être conscient d'être conscient de quelque chose au moment où l'on est conscient de cette chose. Conscience propre[Quoi ?], par conséquent[Comment ?], est une causa sui du cogito. Elle doit être interprétée comme cause d'elle-même.
Dans la tradition philosophico-théologique[Laquelle ?], Dieu ne peut pas être créé par une autre force que son être propre, donc Dieu est sa propre cause (causa sui) ou, dans certains cas[Lesquels ?], sans causes.
