Le barracuda est un poisson carnivore de grande taille (jusqu'à 2 m). Le corps du barracuda est allongé, avec une mâchoire inférieure de grande taille et des dents en forme de croc. Les deux ailerons dorsaux sont largement séparés, le premier ayant cinq épines et le seconde une épine et neuf rayons mous.

Les barracudas sont en principe comestibles, cependant, leur chair peut de temps en temps contenir une toxine, la ciguatera.

Les barracudas vivent soit isolés soit en bancs. On les trouve généralement autour des récifs, mais ils apparaissent également dans les mers ouvertes. Ce sont des prédateurs voraces qui comptent, pour la chasse, sur l'effet de surprise suivi d'une courte accélération.

Les incidents avec des hommes sont extrêmement rares bien que les barracudas suivent parfois des plongeurs de scaphandre à travers le récif.
