Le groupement éthyle (C'2H5°) est un radical alkyle, qui dérive de l'éthane par perte d'un atome d'hydrogène.
Selon la nomenclature internationale de l'IUPAC, pour nommer les radicaux organiques, on prend le nom de l'alcane correspondant dans lequel on remplace le suffixe -ane par le suffixe -yle.
C2H6 → C2H5° + H° (Éthane → Éthyle + 1 atome d'hydrogène)
Le ° de C2H5° signifie que c'est un radical.
Lorsque le groupe éthyle est un substituant d'une chaîne ou d'un cycle prioritaire selon la nomenclature IUPAC, le suffixe -yle devient -yl. Exemples : éthylbenzène, 4-éthylheptane perdent le « e » de -yle mais celui-ci ne disparaît pas dans acétate d'éthyle.
