Le Zoopraxiscope est l'un des premiers dispositifs permettant la visualisation de courtes séquences animées. Il fut créé par Eadweard Muybridge, l'un des pionniers de la photographie en 1879. Il est considéré comme le premier dispositif moderne de visualisation cinématographique.
Grâce à leur rotation dans l'appareil de projection, les images sur le disque donnent l'impression de mouvement. Les premières séries de disques utilisées étaient peintes à la main. Mais, à partir des années 1892 - 1894, les images sont imprimées puis coloriées à la main. Certains disques étaient composés d'images complexes, représentant des mouvements d'homme ou d'animal.
Le dispositif du Zoopraxiscope semble avoir été l'une des premières inspirations de Thomas Edison et William Dickson pour leur Kinétoscope, le premier dispositif de visualisation de films à vocation commerciale.
En 2004, il restait soixante-et-onze Zoopraxiscopes qui ont été reproduits pour la publication du livre sur Eadweard Muybridge : The Kingston Museum Bequest.
