Yusuf Âdil Shâh

Yusuf Adil Shah (1459 - 1511 A.D) est le fondateur de la dynastie des Adil Shahi, souverains du sultanat de Bijapur pendant plus de deux siècles. C'est à lui que l'on attribue le développement de Bijapur qui devient sous son règne un centre important.

La légende des origines

Yusuf Adil Shah était sans doute un aristocrate Bahmani d'origine iranienne. Selon l'historien Mir Rafi-uddin Ibrahim-i Shirazi, ou Rafi', son titre complet était Sultan Yusuf 'Adil Shah Sawa ou Sawa-i, fils de Mahmud Beg de Sawa en Iran [1].

Toujours selon Rafi, l'histoire de la dynastie fut entreprise à la demande d'Ibrahim Adil Shah II, sa rédaction terminée en 1017 (AH). T.N. Devare, spécialiste de l'Inde, remarque que si son histoire de la dynastie des Bahmani est très approximative, celle des Adilshahi est assez exacte, exhaustive, et contient des informations riches et variées sur Ali I et Ibrahim II[2].

Le travail de Rafi est moins connu que celui de l'historien Firishta, auteur des Nawras- nama, également connu sous le nom de Gulshan-i Ibrahim. Rafi contredit une légende colportée par Firishta sur les origines de la dynastie des Adil Shahi. Selon lui, Yusuf Adil Shah était le fils présumé de Murad II, sultan ottoman et calife musulman, auquel succéda un de ses fils, Mehmed II. Après son accession au trône, le nouveau sultan aurait ordonné l'exécution par strangulation de tous ses frères, y compris Yusuf. La mère de celui-ci réussit à le sauver en le remplaçant par un esclave; Elle s'arrangea ensuite pour faire passer Yusuf en Perse. Yusuf finit par revenir en Inde, entra au service du souverain Bahmani du Deccan, et se tailla une place de choix à la cour de Mahmud II.
