Work Breakdown Structure

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) (en anglais ; en français : Structure de découpage du projet – SDP ; le sigle anglais étant le plus souvent utilisé) est une décomposition hiérarchique, axée sur les tâches et activités, du travail que l’équipe de projet doit exécuter pour atteindre les objectifs du projet et produire les livrables voulus (définition du Project Management Institute).

Le WBS est constituée d'éléments. Chaque élément correspond à une tâche ou à un ensemble de tâches du projet. Le premier élément d’un WBS est le projet lui-même et donc, il reçoit le nom du projet. À partir de celui-ci, des autres éléments sont créés en dessous pour représenter chaque élément du projet.

Le WBS a pour but d’aider à organiser le projet, à établir la planification de référence et le budget prévisionnel. Il permet également de déléguer et de contractualiser la mission confiée à chaque acteur.

Origine

Le concept de WBS a été développé par le Département américain de la Défense (United States Department of Defense), pour piloter la mise au point du programme de missile Polaris en 1967 dans la Marine. Même si le terme n'était à l'époque pas employé, il constitue la première application d'une décomposition hierarchique axée sur les tâches et activités à produire pour atteindre les livrables (résultats) voulus. C'est en 1962 que la NASA et l'industrie aéronautique publient un article qui décrit l'approche WBS[1]. En 1968, le Département américain de la Défense publie une notice définissant l'utilisation de cette méthode de projet dans l'industrie aéronautique[2]
