En août 1950 le général Walter Bedell Beetle Smith (5 octobre 1895 – 9 août 1961) est nommé, selon les documents MJ, en remplacement du secrétaire d’Etat James Forrestal. Smith avait été chef d’Etat-major US sous le commandement suprême des forces alliées en Europe de Dwight D. Eisenhower puis ambassadeur en URSS.
Nommé Director of Central Intelligence en octobre 1950. Il donnera à la CIA en la réorganisant complètement, son architecture actuelle et dirigera cette agence jusqu’en 1953. Smith décède en 1961.
