La Wikipédia en latin (Vicipaedia) a été créée en 2002 et a franchi le cap des 31 000 articles le 14 septembre 2009. Il s'agit de la première Wikipédia de langue morte.
Mort ou vivant ?
En tant que langue maternelle le latin est en effet mort. Cette langue classique, répandue dans les pays méditerranéens au temps de l'Empire romain, n'a plus de locuteurs « natifs » (à quelques exceptions près). Historiquement les langues romanes, y compris le français, l'ont remplacé. Mais le latin a refusé de disparaître : à cet égard on citera son utilisation courante et obligatoire dans les noms, descriptions et diagnoses de toute nouvelle espèce biologique ; on n'oubliera pas sa présence dans l'église catholique.
Statistiques
La croissance de la Wikipédia en latin a été, au commencement, plus lente que celle des Wikipédias dans les grandes langues comme l'anglais, le français, l'espagnol, le russe. Entre le premier article sur la Suède et l'article numéro 5 000 on compte quatre années. À partir de là son progrès a été beaucoup plus rapide (mille nouveaux articles sont ajoutés tous les deux mois) et la qualité s'améliore sensiblement.
