L' uppercut consiste à couper délibérément de son plus gros atout pour forcer l'adversaire à jouer un atout maître et, ainsi, promouvoir un atout du partenaire. Ici, après As et Roi, Ouest continue  ; Est, en coupant du 10 (l' uppercut), oblige Sud à surcouper : le Valet d'Ouest est promu.
