Le satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory
Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) (Observatoire du climat dans l'espace lointain, anciennement appelé programme Triana) est un satellite de la NASA proposé par Al Gore alors qu'il était vice-président des États-Unis en 1998 afin d'observer la Terre à une distance d'1,5 million de kilomètres.
L'objectif initial du satellite était de fournir une image continue et en temps réel de la face éclairée de la Terre sur Internet. L'intention de Gore était de réveiller les consciences en plus de fournir un baromètre du réchauffement climatique. Les objectifs scientifiques s'étendirent par la suite à la mesure de l'énergie solaire, des mouvements des nuages, l'observation de la végétation terrestre et la quantité de rayons ultraviolets qui atteignent la surface de la planète à travers la couche d'ozone, les rayonnements solaires réfléchis par la terre.
Critiqué par ses adversaires, le projet était parfois appelé par ces derniers « GoreSat », ou « un écran de veille au prix faramineux » par certains républicains. Le Congrès demanda à la National Academy of Sciences d'étudier la valeur de ce projet. Le rapport détermina qu'il était « fort et vital »[1].
Le projet subit de nombreuses hostilités politiques d'un côté et bénéficia d'un soutien scientifique de l'autre mais le satellite ne pu être lancé ni même terminé. Le satellite, dont le coût fut de 100 millions de dollars, est toujours stocké dans un lieu au prix de 1 millions de dollars par an.
