Les Traveling Wilburys sont un supergroupe fondé par Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne et Roy Orbison. Jim Keltner fut surnommé le « sixième Wilbury ».

Le groupe

En 1988, George Harrison demande à Bob Dylan d'utiliser son studio à Malibu pour enregistrer avec Roy Orbison une chanson, Handle With Care. Tom Petty étant présent, l'ambiance tourne à la fête et ainsi voient le jour les Traveling Wilburys[1]. Sur les albums chacun d'entre eux apparaît sous un pseudonyme, tous étant censés être demi-frères de la famille Wilbury.

Leur premier album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, sort en 1988. Dès sa sortie, le groupe travaille sur un deuxième album. Mais la mort de Roy Orbison en décembre 1988 interrompt ce projet.

Le groupe décide d’interrompre le travail en cours, pour marquer l’absence d’un de ses membres et lui rend hommage dans le clip de la chanson End of the Line, où chaque membre du groupe est présent, y compris Orbison, représenté par une guitare sur une chaise à bascule qui se balance au rythme de la chanson pendant que Orbison chante.

Dans cet album, les seules indications permettant d'identifier les membres du groupe sont une photo floue et vieillie ainsi que des remerciements à Barbara Orbison et Dhani (Harrison, le fils de George).

Sur le deuxième album, on aperçoit plusieurs photos assez claires permettant d'identifier les membres, en plus de remerciements à Jane Petty et Dhani (Harrison). Cet album est dédié à Lefty Wilbury, Roy Orbison.
