L'univers dans une coquille de noix est un des livres de Stephen Hawking sur la physique théorique. Il explique au grand public diverses questions relatives aux travaux du professeur de mathématique lucasien, comme le théorème d'incomplétude de Gödel et Brane (théorie des supercordes dans la mécanique quantique).

L'univers dans une coquille de noix est lauréat du Royal Society Prizes for Science Books en 2002. Il est généralement considéré comme la suite d'un autre de ses ouvrages et a été créé pour que le grand public puisse mettre à jours ses connaissances depuis la parution du bestseller A Brief History of Time en 1988 et publié des millions de fois.
