The Big One est le nom donné à un tremblement de terre dévastateur qui devrait survenir sur la côte ouest des États-Unis.

Le dernier grand tremblement de terre de cette région a été provoqué par la séparation de deux plaques terrestres dans la faille de San Andreas, en 1906. Ce phénomène se reproduirait périodiquement, tous les 100 ans environ, les Américains s'attendraient donc au prochain Big One. Les scientifiques estiment qu'il interviendrait avant 2032, avec une probabilité de 62%[1],[2].

Caractéristiques possibles 

Le tremblement de terre pourrait être causé par la faille de Puente Hills, une faille située directement sous Los Angeles. Cette faille pourrait causer la destruction de la majorité des gratte-ciel, la mort de 18 000 personnes, et 300 000 sans-abris[1].
