Avec des bases mêlant jazz, blues et rock'n roll, le guitariste Jeff Golub a pendant longtemps travaillé en studio avec de très grands artistes tels que Rod Stewart et bien d'autres. Il sort son premier album solo Unspoken Words en 1988.
Il forme Avenue Blue quelques années plus tard pour explorer les facettes les plus soft du blues et du jazz. Le premier album éponyme comprend Rick Braun à la trompette, David Palmer à la batterie, Kevin Savagar aux claviers, le bassiste acoustique Jack Daro et le bassiste electrique Cliff Hugo.
