Elle naquit le 12 août 1904, décéda le 23 décembre 2007. Son nom de naissance fut Teji Suri de parents penjabi, elle épousa Harivansh Rai Bachchan en 1941 après que celui-ci eut perdu sa première épouse décédée. Teji fut une actrice autant que chanteuse comme toutes les actrices et chanteuses indiennes.
Teji Bachchan était proche de la famille Nehru-Gandhi pendant que sa famille résida a New Delhi dans les années 50. Néanmoins, les relations récentes entre les deux familles ne se sont pas réchauffés.
Teji eu deux fils : Amitabh et Ajitabh. Amitabh Bachchan est une superstar bollywoodienne et son petit-fils également. Aishwarya Rai est sa belle fille.
